SAMS Teaching Block, Dunbeg, Oban

This major educational project combined the conversion of a former Argyll College building with the construction of a new-build three-storey teaching block for the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS). The comprehensive facility includes modern lecture rooms, specialized laboratories, administrative offices and canteen facilities, creating a state-of-the-art marine science education center serving the University of Highlands and Islands network.

The structural engineering solution integrated heritage building conversion with contemporary new-build construction, requiring careful coordination between existing and new structural systems. The three-storey teaching block was designed to accommodate specialized marine science laboratories with enhanced services for research equipment and specimen handling. Lecture rooms were engineered with appropriate acoustic performance and flexible seating arrangements. The canteen and office areas required different structural approaches to support varied occupancy and loading requirements.

Key engineering challenges included seamlessly integrating the converted former college building with the new three-storey teaching block while maintaining distinct functional requirements for each area. The specialized marine science laboratories demanded enhanced structural performance for vibration-sensitive equipment and specialized services integration. The coastal Oban location required consideration of environmental factors including wind loading and potential corrosion protection for long-term durability.
