Detailed information about the The High School of Glasgow project
Project Overview
A comprehensive thirteen-year programme of redevelopment encompassing both Junior and Secondary Schools at The High School of Glasgow. This extensive project included the construction of new specialized facilities including a Kindergarten, Junior Classrooms, Music Department, Drama Studio and Classrooms, IT Wing, Main Entrance and Science Block, transforming the educational infrastructure across multiple phases.
Technical Details
The structural engineering approach accommodated phased construction over thirteen years while maintaining continuous school operations. Each phase required careful integration with existing structures and services while providing modern educational facilities. The diverse building types demanded varied structural solutions, from lightweight classroom construction to specialized facilities for music and drama with specific acoustic and vibration requirements. The Science Block required enhanced services integration and safety systems.
Challenges
The primary engineering challenge was managing a complex phased redevelopment programme while maintaining full educational operations throughout the construction period. Coordinating seven separate projects with values ranging from £0.2 million to £3.2 million required careful sequencing and integration. Each phase needed to complement existing structures while providing modern educational standards. The variety of specialized spaces, from kindergarten facilities to science laboratories, demanded diverse structural and services solutions.
Outcomes
The completed redevelopment programme successfully transformed The High School of Glasgow into a modern educational facility while preserving the continuity of education throughout the construction period. The phased approach allowed for careful integration of new facilities with existing structures, creating a cohesive campus that serves both Junior and Secondary education needs. The project demonstrates successful long-term educational infrastructure development that balances heritage preservation with modern educational requirements.
